NIS strongly believes in the importance of supporting young children and their families in the earliest years of life.

NIS is an evaluator and provider of services for infants and toddlers who are experiencing developmental delays.Parents, teachers and therapists work as partners to encourage the child’s optimal development and to support the family as a whole.

NIS is approved by New York State and has a contract with Suffolk County to provide the following services:

  • • Evaluation Services
  • • Special Education
  • • Speech and Language Therapy
  • • Physical and Occupational Therapy
  • • Social Work
  • • Psychological Services

In order to receive an evaluation or services, the child must be referred to the Suffolk County Division of Services for Children with Disabilities.

This referral may be made through NIS or directly
by calling: 631-853-3100

The Early Intervention Program of New York State is a public program for children under the age of three who have special needs.  Children with diagnosed conditions that lead to developmental delays are eligible for this program. In addition, children who do not have a diagnosis but who have significant delays in development may also be eligible for services.  All services that are authorized by Suffolk County are provided at no cost to you.  Your child’s health insurance may be used to cover some of the costs.  All other costs for these services are paid for by Suffolk County and New York State.   The Early Intervention Program of New York State does not pay for day care or other fees charged by community settings.

Only state approved evaluators such as NIS who are under contract with Suffolk County can determine eligibility for this program. If a child is found eligible for services, an individualized service plan will be created for the child by a team including the parents, and a representative of Suffolk County. This representative will arrange for providers to deliver the authorized services.
