PRESCHOOL SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS (3 and 4 year olds)

NIS offers a variety of preschool programs designed to meet our children's individual needs while recognizing the strengths of our children. They range from small self-contained classes to larger inclusion classes and Pre-K. All children have opportunities to learn and socialize with their typically developing peers.

                NIS kids are "interactive"!

C
lasses run from September
to June, with a 6 week summer program available for eligible children.

All classes are staffed by experienced Special Educators with Master's degrees, and with paraprofessionals. Each inclusion/integrated class
has an additional nursery school teacher.

Each child's program is carefully planned reflecting the goals on the Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Therapeutic support services are provided individually and/or in groups. Family Education and counselling are available for all families.

SPECIAL EDUCATION CLASSES   For children with a range of development delays and disabilities. By enhancing the child's development in these crucial early years lifelong growth will be maximized.

Staff to child ratios vary according to the needs of each child and the recommendations of the IEP.

AUTISM INTERDISCIPLINARY MODEL (AIM) A total program for children with autism spectrum disorders, pervasive development disorder and other related disabilities. This model is based on the integration of three different models:

1) Applied Behavorial Analysis (ABA)
Structured learning activities are used to increase social abilities, facilitate learning and decrease problematic behavior through positive reinforcement. The program is based on the work of Dr. Ivar Lovass, and other behaviorists.

2) Social Interactive Approach
Based on the work of Dr. Stanley Greenspan this approach facilitates the development of social skills through child directed, child initiated activities.

3) Sensory Integration
The organization and integration of sensory input to is used to facilitate learning and allow the child to interact with his/her environment.

Support services such as speech/language therapy, play therapy, motor therapy, and music therapy are provided as needed in the classroom or individually. The program's goal is to provide children with all necessary support in a structured environment leading to generalized use of skills in a variety of settings. Because our school is an integrated setting children have the opportunity to interact with their typical peers throughout the school day.

PARENT PARTICIPATION Parents meet weekly and participate in a group led by the team psychologist/social worker. Home and school visits are planned to share ideas on management issues, strategies and enhancing the child's functioning.

INCLUSION/INTEGRATED PROGRAM
Provides an opportunity for children with developmental delays to learn from their more typically developing peers. It also enables typical children to socialize with and learn from children with disabilities.

The special educator, nursery school teacher and paraprofessional work collaboratively to provide all the children with an educationally and socially enriched environment. In addition, this program serves as an effective transition when children are entering inclusion programs for their kindergarten year.

SPECIAL EDUCATION ITINERANT TEACHER (SEIT) provides educational services at home and in community settings.

NURSERY SCHOOL
