Special Education

NIS offers a variety of programs designed to meet each child’s individual needs.

If your child seems delayed in physical, emotional, cognitive, or language development, he/she may be eligible for services.  NIS provides full comprehensive evaluations in all areas of development at no direct cost to the parent.  Tuition and transportation for children who are eligible for program are funded through the NYS Dept. of Ed. and Suffolk County Dept. of Health.  

Classes

Classes range from small self-contained groups to larger inclusion classes. All children have opportunities to learn and socialize with their typically developing peers.

Each child’s program is carefully planned to reflect the goals on their Individual Education Plan (IEP). Therapeutic support services are provided individually or in groups. Family education and counseling are available for all families.

Classes run from September to June, with a 6-week summer program for eligible children.

Monday-Friday
9:00am - 11:30am
12:30pm - 3:00pm
9:00am - 2:30pm

Integrated Classes (18:2:1)

(Half and Full Day) Our integrated classes are team taught by a Special Education teacher and an Early Childhood teacher, assisted by a certified Teacher Assistant.  Classes offer both typically developing and special needs children the opportunity to learn with and from each other in an educationally and socially enriched environment.

Special Education Self-Contained Classes (12:1:1)

(Full Day) These classes provide an opportunity for children with developmental delays to learn in a small structured environment. Activities are planned according to the goals and objectives of the children’s IEP's.

Autism Interdisciplinary Model (AIM) (8:1:2 or 6:1:2)

(Full Day) Small classes with high adult to child ratios designed to meet the needs of children displaying behaviors associated with ASD and other related disabilities.  This Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Intervention (NDBI) integrates three therapeutic approaches: Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), targeted relational and communication training, and developmentally appropriate practices, including sensory integration.  A strong parent education and support component is included. NIS is collaborating with the University of Pennsylvania in conducting research and data collection on this model.
